Stainless Steel 904L is an austenitic alloy containing approximately 19–23% chromium, 23–28% nickel, 4–5% molybdenum, and up to about 1–2% copper, with very low carbon and controlled levels of manganese, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur for improved weldability. This balanced composition provides excellent resistance to reducing acids, chloride pitting, and crevice corrosion, outperforming 316L and 317L in harsh media. Typical mechanical properties include minimum tensile strength around 490 MPa, yield strength about 220 MPa, elongation near 35%, and moderate hardness, ensuring good formability and toughness.
